Evidence of an attack surfaced on the dark web earlier this week when the <a href=\"https:\/\/therecord.media\/tag\/alphv\/\">ALPHV ransomware group<\/a> added the company to its data leak site.<\/p>\n<p>Encino Energy spokesperson Jackie Stewart would not say if the cyberattack was a ransomware incident, if the company paid a ransom or if it had examined the 400GB of data on ALPHV\u2019s site. The post by the cybercrime group does not mention a dollar figure or a deadline for payment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEncino Energy was previously aware of unauthorized activity, investigated the action, and remediated the issue,\u201d Stewart said.<\/p>\n<p>The company, which is the largest oil producer in Ohio, did not say when the attack occurred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no impact to our operations, and we continue to operate business as usual,\u201d Stewart said.<\/p>\n<p>ALPHV, also known as BlackCat, is a <a href=\"https:\/\/therecord.media\/blackmatter-ransomware-says-its-shutting-down-due-to-pressure-from-local-authorities\/\">rebrand<\/a> of the prolific <a href=\"https:\/\/therecord.media\/cisa-fbi-and-nsa-warn-of-blackmatter-attacks-on-agriculture-and-other-critical-infrastructure\/\">BlackMatter ransomware group<\/a>, which itself was allegedly a rebrand of the DarkSide ransomware \u2014 a gang <a href=\"https:\/\/therecord.media\/fbi-colonial-pipeline-was-hit-with-darkside-ransomware\/\">accused<\/a> of launching the headline-grabbing <a href=\"https:\/\/therecord.media\/biden-official-one-of-arrested-russian-hackers-carried-out-the-colonial-pipeline-attack\/\">attack on Colonial Pipeline<\/a> in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/therecord.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/FppjBI9XEAAJRPr.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 831px) 100vw, 831px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/therecord.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/FppjBI9XEAAJRPr.png 831w, https:\/\/therecord.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/FppjBI9XEAAJRPr-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/therecord.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/FppjBI9XEAAJRPr-768x317.png 768w, https:\/\/therecord.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/FppjBI9XEAAJRPr-128x53.png 128w, https:\/\/therecord.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/FppjBI9XEAAJRPr-216x89.png 216w, https:\/\/therecord.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/FppjBI9XEAAJRPr-335x138.png 335w, https:\/\/therecord.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/FppjBI9XEAAJRPr-406x168.png 406w, https:\/\/therecord.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/FppjBI9XEAAJRPr-227x94.png 227w, https:\/\/therecord.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/FppjBI9XEAAJRPr-798x329.png 798w, https:\/\/therecord.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/FppjBI9XEAAJRPr-260x107.png 260w\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Stewart did not respond to questions about whether the incident was reported to federal authorities \u2014 as <a href=\"https:\/\/therecord.media\/tsa-unveils-updated-cybersecurity-regulations-of-oil-and-gas-pipelines\/\">mandated by directives<\/a> handed down by Transportation Security Administration in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The attack on Encino Energy would be the latest on an oil and gas producer by ALPHV, which was previously implicated in an incident <a href=\"https:\/\/therecord.media\/luxembourg-energy-companies-struggling-with-alleged-ransomware-attack-data-breach\/\">involving two energy companies based in Luxembourg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u200bAn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/blackcat-ransomware-implicated-in-attack-on-german-oil-companies\/\">internal report from Germany\u2019s Federal Office for Information Security<\/a> said the ALPHV ransomware group was behind a February 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/shell-forced-re-route-oil-supplies-after-cyberattack-on-german-companies\/\">cyberattack on oil companies Oiltanking and Mabanaft<\/a>, both owned by German logistics conglomerate Marquard &amp; Bahls.<\/p>\n<p>The attack crippled their loading and unloading systems, and Oiltanking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/shell-forced-re-route-oil-supplies-after-cyberattack-on-german-companies\/\">said<\/a> it \u201cdeclared force majeure\u201d due to the attacks.
